Driven to distractionThe majority British motorists feel that the installation of more than 5,000 speed cameras on UK roads is having a detrimental effect on their driving.A survey by RoadPilot Ltd has found that 53 per cent of respondents believe their attention is distracted from the road ahead as a result of having to look out for speed cameras. In addition, one in three drivers brake instinctively on seeing a camera regardless of their vehicle’s speed, posing a clear danger to any cars following behind.Many motorists say they are often unaware of deviations from national speed restrictions – 52 per cent stated that there is insufficient signage to notify them of local speed limits. “It is worrying that many people think that speed cameras are having an adverse effect on their driving, especially given that they were introduced as a means of improving road safety in the first place,” comments James Flynn OBE, CEO of RoadPilot. The RoadPilot microGo is the world’s smallest GPS-based speed camera locator – at just five by six centimetres – and helps drivers to be more aware of their speed in relation to local limits by displaying the vehicle’s precise speed, to a greater degree of accuracy than the car’s standard speedometer. “By giving the driver advanced warning of any upcoming cameras through audio and visual alerts, the microGo allows motorists to better concentrate on the road ahead,” Flynn continues. With reported thefts of portable technology (e.g. satellite navigation and speed camera detection units) from parked vehicles becoming increasingly commonplace, the “plug and go“ microGo is reassuringly easy to carry or move from car to car, especially when compared to bulkier rival devices.
